Heiress Abigail Disney has announced her intention to resume donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign. Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, previously declared that she would halt her contributions until the party replaced Biden as its candidate.
In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her renewed support, stating, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” now that Biden has stepped aside and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidential run. Earlier this month, when she indicated her withdrawal of support, she had also expressed backing for Harris.
Disney remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Her decision to withhold donations was part of a broader dissatisfaction among elite Democratic donors, following Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the donor community and declining financial support contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw.
Notable figures within the Democratic donor base, including George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris in light of Biden’s exit from the race.
