Heiress Abigail Disney has announced her intention to resume donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney, a member of the Disney family and granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, stated that she would halt her contributions to the party unless Biden stepped aside. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her renewed support now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate for president.
When she initially declared her intention to withhold donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, praising her capabilities. “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot,” she stated.
Disney was not alone in her discontent, as many prominent Democratic donors expressed frustration with Biden’s performance, particularly following his underwhelming debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from major donors and dwindling support partially influenced Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also extended their endorsement to Harris following Biden’s announcement.
