Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race.
Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated that she would halt all donations to the party until Biden’s position at the top of the ticket was changed. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s decision to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor.
When she initially decided to stop her donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s stance mirrors that of several elite Democratic donors who have reacted negatively to Biden’s performance in debates against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that dissatisfaction among donors and a decrease in funding were significant factors in Biden’s decision to step down from the race.
Notable figures such as George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also voiced their support for Harris following the announcement of Biden’s exit from the presidential race.
