Heiress Abigail Disney announced she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race.
Disney, who is the granddaughter of a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, had previously declared that she would halt her contributions until a change was made at the top of the party ticket. In a recent email to CNBC, she confirmed her decision to back the Democratic Party once again, following Biden’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
When she initially stated her intention to withhold donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s announcement comes amid a shift among certain elite Democratic donors frustrated with Biden’s performance, particularly after a poor debate against former President Donald Trump. This dissatisfaction among financial backers contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside, as reported. Following Biden’s exit from the race, prominent figures such as George Soros and his son Alex Soros also supported Harris for the presidential nomination.
