Heiress Abigail Disney announced that she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has exited the presidential race.
Disney, who is a granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated earlier this month that she would cease her donations until the party replaced Biden as their candidate. However, in an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed her return to supporting the party now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency.
When she initially decided to withhold donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s – and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity – and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney’s decision to withdraw support was echoed by many prominent donors in the Democratic Party, particularly after Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports indicate that pressures from major donors and a decrease in funding contributed to Biden’s decision to step aside.
Following Biden’s withdrawal, George Soros and his son Alex Soros also voiced their endorsement of Kamala Harris.
