Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her contributions to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, had previously stated that she would cease her financial support until Biden was replaced as the Democratic nominee.
In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her intention to restart her donations now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for the presidency. Earlier this month, she expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s qualifications and urging the Democratic Party to unify behind her.
Disney remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Her decision to withhold donations came in response to Biden’s poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump, which drew backlash from key Democratic donors. Reports suggest that pressure from high-profile donors, along with declining financial support, contributed to Biden’s exit from the race. Additionally, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also publicly endorsed Harris following Biden’s announcement.
