Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party following President Joe Biden’s decision not to seek reelection. Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated that she would halt any contributions until the party replaced Biden at the top of the ticket.
In a recent email to CNBC, Disney confirmed her decision to begin supporting the party again, now that Biden has stepped back and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as his successor. When she initially chose to withhold her donations, she expressed her support for Harris, emphasizing the Vice President’s qualifications.
Disney remarked, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
She was among a number of prominent Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden following his poor debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the party’s donor base, along with dwindling financial support, played a significant role in Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race.
Notably, financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their endorsement for Harris after Biden announced his exit from the presidential race.
