Heiress Abigail Disney has announced that she will resume her donations to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the 2024 presidential race. Earlier this month, Disney stated she would cease contributions until a new candidate was selected to lead the ticket. Following Biden’s decision to drop out and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, she confirmed her return to support in an email to CNBC, saying, “Yes, I will resume supporting.”
At the time of her initial statement, Disney had also expressed her backing for Harris. She emphasized the Vice President’s potential, saying, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s—and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity—and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney is among a group of prominent Democratic donors who have expressed discontent with Biden, particularly following his lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from the donor class and dwindling financial support played a role in Biden’s decision to step down. Notable financier George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also endorsed Harris in light of Biden’s departure from the race.
