Heiress Abigail Disney announced she will resume her financial contributions to the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden decided to withdraw from the reelection race.
Disney, whose grandfather was a co-founder of The Walt Disney Company, had previously stated earlier this month that she would halt her donations until the party finds a new candidate to lead the ticket. In an email to CNBC on Monday, she confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting” now that Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president.
When she initially decided to pause her donations, Disney expressed her support for Harris, praising her capabilities as Vice President. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several high-profile Democratic donors who reacted negatively to Biden’s underwhelming debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from wealthy donors and dwindling funds contributed to Biden’s decision to step down from the race. Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also expressed their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
