Disney Heiress Backs Harris: A Shift in Democratic Funding

Heiress Abigail Disney has announced her intention to resume financial contributions to the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided not to seek reelection. Disney, the granddaughter of one of the co-founders of The Walt Disney Company, previously stated that she would halt her donations until Biden was replaced as the party’s candidate.

In an email to CNBC, Disney confirmed, “Yes, I will resume supporting,” following Biden’s exit and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris as the next presidential candidate. When she initially declared her decision to withdraw her support, she also expressed her backing for Harris.

Disney praised Harris, stating, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity) and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”

Her shift in support mirrors a broader sentiment among elite Democratic donors who expressed dissatisfaction with Biden’s performance, especially following a challenging debate against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from key financial backers contributed to Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race. Notably, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, have also voiced their support for Harris following Biden’s announcement.
