Heiress Abigail Disney announced she will resume her financial support for the Democratic Party now that President Joe Biden has decided to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Earlier this month, Disney, whose grandfather co-founded The Walt Disney Company, expressed her intent to cease contributions to the party until Biden was replaced as the candidate. Following Biden’s withdrawal and his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for president, she confirmed her decision to support the party again in an email to CNBC on Monday.
When she initially decided to withhold donations, Disney also expressed her backing for Harris. She stated, “We have an excellent Vice President. If Democrats would tolerate any of her perceived shortcomings even one-tenth as much as they have tolerated Biden’s (and let’s not kid ourselves about where race and gender figure in that inequity), and if Democrats can find a way to stop quibbling and rally around her, we can win this election by a lot.”
Disney was among several prominent Democratic donors who expressed discontent with Biden following his underwhelming debate performance against former President Donald Trump. Reports suggest that pressure from donors and declining financial support played a role in Biden’s decision to step aside. Similarly, George Soros and his son, Alex Soros, also voiced their support for Harris after the announcement of Biden’s exit from the race.
