Disney+ has officially begun rolling out HDR10+ format for select titles, following its long-awaited announcement in January. Initially, this feature is available exclusively for Hulu content, with a library of over 1,000 titles now enhanced by HDR10+, which offers expanded color and dynamic range. Unlike the standard HDR10 format, HDR10+ utilizes dynamic metadata on a scene-by-scene basis, similar to Dolby Vision, resulting in improved picture quality, particularly for mid-range TVs with limited HDR capabilities.
At launch, all HDR10+ content on Disney+ is exclusive to Samsung TVs, compatible with 2018 models and newer, including both LCD and OLED displays, as well as select Samsung Smart monitors. To access HDR10+ content, users must ensure their Disney+ app is updated and subscribe to the Disney+ Premium plan, which also encompasses 4K and Dolby Atmos content. Following this initial rollout, Disney plans to expand HDR10+ support to more Hulu titles and eventually to Disney+ originals.
Disney’s move aligns with the growing trend among streaming services, as companies like Amazon, Apple, and Netflix have also adopted HDR10+ technology. This partnership with Samsung isn’t surprising, given the company’s pivotal role in developing HDR10+ and its ongoing strategy to prioritize the format over Dolby Vision.
Inbeom Kim, VP of Visual Display at Samsung, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting their commitment to enhancing the HDR10+ experience across various platforms and devices. However, it remains disappointing for owners of other TV brands or streaming devices like Apple TV 4K and Amazon Fire TV, as they currently do not have access to HDR10+. Disney has yet to provide a timeline for when broader availability will occur.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, the integration of advanced formats like HDR10+ symbolizes a significant step forward in delivering superior visual experiences to audiences.
