Disability Inclusion Takes Center Stage in 16 Days of Activism

The global initiative, 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, underscores the pivotal connections between disability rights, gender equality, and social justice. In her message marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), Sainimili Tawake, CEO of the Pacific Disability Forum (PDF), emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, who are often vulnerable to marginalization, exclusion, and violence.

This year’s theme, “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress,” highlights the urgent need for robust action at both national and regional levels to combat these issues. Tawake pointed out that equality and inclusion are fundamental components of sustainable development, arguing that integrating disability inclusion into society is not only a moral obligation but also a means to create stronger, more resilient, and equitable communities.

In response to these challenges, the PDF has launched a groundbreaking initiative titled the “16 Days of Disability Activism,” which seeks to elevate the significance of disability equity and inclusion as critical factors for establishing safe and thriving communities. Tawake stressed that sustainable social progress can only be achieved if no one is left behind, calling on governments, civil society, and local communities throughout Fiji and the broader region to enhance their efforts in empowering individuals with disabilities and shielding them from violence and discrimination.

Additionally, Tawake highlighted that this day serves as a moment to celebrate the “strength, leadership, and contributions of persons with disabilities.” It is also an opportunity to reaffirm commitments to the creation of inclusive, violence-free, and equitable societies.

This initiative encourages a collective response to fostering inclusion, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their abilities, can participate fully in society, thereby paving the way for progress and unity.
