DirecTV’s Channel Blackout: What Sports Fans Need to Know!

DirecTV subscribers experienced a blackout of popular channels, including ESPN, Disney Channel, and FX, on Sunday night. This situation arose due to ongoing negotiations between DirecTV and Disney for a new contract following the expiration of a five-year agreement on September 1. The blackout has significant implications for sports fans, particularly as the college football season is starting and NFL games are set to begin this weekend.

With the blackout in place, DirecTV customers are left without access to Disney’s content and must seek alternative live TV streaming services to watch ESPN and other affected channels. More than 11 million pay-TV subscribers have been impacted, missing out on ESPN and ESPN2 during a critical time for sports.

In addition to ESPN, several other channels are also unavailable, including ESPN Deportes, ESPNU, ESPN News, ACC Network, SEC Network, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, FX, FX Movie Channel, FXX, Freeform, and National Geographic channels.

For viewers looking to watch ESPN and other Disney-owned channels without DirecTV, here are several options:

Sling TV: The Orange plan offers 34 channels, including ESPN and Disney Channel, for $20 for the first month, with a regular charge of $40 per month thereafter.

YouTube TV: This service allows streaming of major broadcast and cable networks, including ESPN, starting with a free trial, then $64.99 per month for the first four months, rising to $72.99 after that.

ESPN+: While ESPN+ does not include traditional TV content from ESPN, it features other shows and events. Subscriptions start at $10.99 a month, with bundle options including Hulu and Disney+ available for $14.99 a month.

Fubo: Fubo offers ESPN along with other channels and cloud DVR recording features for $79.99 per month.

Hulu + Live TV: This service provides access to over 90 channels, including ESPN, ESPN+, and Disney+, for $76.99 a month.
