DirecTV has announced an enhanced offering of Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) games for the upcoming season, significantly improving viewing options for fans. According to the company’s statement on Thursday, both residential and business subscribers will have access to more games through local broadcast stations that are part of the E. W. Scripps Company, in addition to nationally aired games on the Ion network.
Subscribers will be able to view the WNBA matches through spillover channels visible on the electronic program guide on Friday evenings. This includes those with Ion in their television packages as well as legacy U-Verse customers. Matthew Hijuelos, Vice President of Distribution at Scripps, remarked, “This is a win for WNBA fans,” emphasizing the benefits of combining Scripps’ local presence with the broader reach of DirecTV’s platforms.
DirecTV’s approach to promote these spillover channels sets it apart from competitors, such as YouTube TV, which has similar channels but has not actively advertised them. For DirecTV viewers, finding the games should be straightforward: national double-header games on Fridays will air on Ion, accessible via specific channels within the service, ensuring that WNBA fans won’t miss out on the action.
This development not only enhances fan engagement but also creates additional opportunities for advertisers aiming to connect with a passionate sports audience. As the WNBA continues to grow in popularity, initiatives like this signal a positive direction for expanded coverage and support for women’s sports.
