Diontae Johnson’s stint with the Houston Texans has come to an end as he was waived from the team on Tuesday. The wide receiver’s journey this season has been tumultuous, marking his third team of the year. Johnson joined the Texans after being claimed on waivers from the Baltimore Ravens on December 26, but he managed to play just one regular season game and one playoff game, totaling three receptions for 24 yards.
Head Coach DeMeco Ryans commented on the situation, stating, “Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. We are onto the Chiefs.” This marks a significant shift in Johnson’s career, as he looks to find a new opportunity after playing for the Carolina Panthers and Ravens earlier this season.
Johnson’s season began with the Panthers, where he played seven regular season games before being traded to the Ravens on October 29. His time with Baltimore was cut short after he was suspended for one game due to refusing to enter a game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13. After being waived by the Ravens on December 20, he found a temporary home in Houston due to the team’s need for additional receiver depth following a key injury to Tank Dell.
Now, as he clears waivers, Johnson, 28, will become an unrestricted free agent seeking his fourth team of the season. This situation presents Johnson with a chance to reinvent himself and find a more stable environment moving forward.
As Houston prepares to face the defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, in the divisional round on Saturday, Johnson will be hoping for a fresh start in a new team that values his skills as a receiver. His resilience throughout this challenging season can serve as an inspiration for athletes navigating the unpredictable nature of professional sports.
