Diontae Johnson’s stint with the Houston Texans has come to an end as he was waived on Tuesday, marking his exit from his third team this season. The wide receiver, who has been navigating a challenging year, managed to record only four receptions for 30 yards since Week 8, with minimal impact during his brief time in Houston.
Head coach DeMeco Ryans addressed the situation, stating, “Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. We are onto the Chiefs,” as the team prepares for their upcoming playoff match against the Kansas City Chiefs. Johnson was initially picked up by the Texans after his time with the Baltimore Ravens, where he participated in just one regular season game and one playoff game, totaling three receptions for 24 yards.
Starting the season with the Carolina Panthers, Johnson’s year took several turns as he was traded to the Ravens on October 29. Despite hopes to enhance the Ravens’ receiving group, his tenure there was marked by controversy; he was suspended for one game due to refusing to enter a match against the Philadelphia Eagles. He was subsequently waived by the Ravens on December 20.
With Johnson’s impending free agency on the horizon, he has the opportunity to seek a fresh start on a new team as he enters the offseason. The 28-year-old player has shown potential and adaptability, traits that may attract interest from other teams looking to strengthen their receiving corps.
As the Houston Texans move forward in their playoff journey, fans can remain optimistic about the team leveraging their current roster to make a strong postseason push, learning from both challenges and opportunities that arise through player changes.
