Securing a dinner reservation in New York City has become increasingly challenging over the past three years, leaving many food enthusiasts frustrated. The struggle to book a table at the city’s most sought-after restaurants has grown from difficult to nearly impossible for many.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, noted that some restaurants are virtually unreachable. He mentioned that even successful restaurateurs lack effective strategies for getting customers inside their establishments.

In response to the intense competition for reservations, the New York state legislature recently voted to ban third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, where users were reselling restaurant reservations for exorbitant prices, similar to practices seen in the concert and sports industry.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, called the legislation a significant win for the hospitality sector, highlighting its potential to lessen reservation competition and protect restaurants from costly no-shows.

Despite this legislative action, the demand for unique and upscale dining experiences continues to exceed availability in the post-COVID era. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India remarked that every sector, including airlines, hotels, and restaurants, is buzzing with activity and fully booked.

India, who has spent 16 years helping high-net-worth families secure exclusive bookings, explained that gaining access to top restaurants involves understanding customer preferences and establishing strong relationships with the establishments.

She pointed out a shift in dining trends, stating, “People have really moved away from fine dining; we rarely have clients interested in extended tasting menus. The trend now leans toward stylish restaurants where the focus often transcends food, fueling a notion of FOMO—fear of missing out.”
