In New York City, securing a reservation at popular restaurants has become increasingly difficult, reaching an all-time high in challenges over the past three years. Many food enthusiasts find the quest for a table at the city’s hottest spots more daunting than ever.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the reservations platform Sevenrooms, noted that some restaurants have become so exclusive that even industry experts admit they lack strategies to secure a table. Montaniel stated, “I’ve spoken to restaurateurs who don’t have any tips to share.”

The situation has led to legislative action, with the New York state legislature recently passing a ban on third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell reservations for exorbitant prices, comparable to tickets for concerts or sporting events.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed this legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, helping to alleviate competition for reservations and shielding restaurants from costly cancellations.

Despite these changes, the surge in demand for trendy and luxurious dining experiences post-COVID continues to outpace available options.
