Dine-out enthusiasts in New York are facing a significant challenge when it comes to securing reservations at the city’s hottest restaurants. Over the past three years, obtaining a seat at these popular dining spots has evolved from a tough task to a nearly impossible one for many hopeful diners.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, recently revealed to Bloomberg that some eateries are virtually inaccessible. Despite engaging with restaurant owners in discussions and panels, he notes that they struggle to provide strategies for securing a reservation.

The situation has prompted the New York state legislature to take action. Last month, they voted to prohibit third-party booking platforms like Appointment Trader, where users were reselling reservations for upwards of $200, a practice reminiscent of ticket scalping for concerts and sporting events.

Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, aiming to lessen competition for reservations and safeguard restaurants against costly no-shows.

Nonetheless, even with these legislative measures, the appetite for unique and extravagant experiences continues to surpass their availability in recent years.
