Joel Montaniel, CEO of Sevenrooms, a restaurant booking platform, revealed that some restaurants have become so sought-after that even industry veterans lack tips for securing a table. He noted, “There are some restaurants that people can’t get into… I don’t have [tips]” when referring to restaurateurs facing this issue themselves.

In an effort to combat the trend of scalping reservations through third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, New York state’s legislature voted last month to ban these platforms, which had been charging users up to $200 for a coveted reservation. Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, heralded this legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector. It is anticipated to reduce the fierce competition for reservations and minimize costly cancellations for restaurants.

Despite this legislative measure, the gap between the desire for trendy dining and its availability continues to widen. “Post-COVID, everything is booked up,” travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted, highlighting the full planes, restaurants, and hotels. With 16 years’ experience in catering to affluent clients, including celebrities and political figures, India emphasizes the importance of relationships with restaurants and understanding customers’ desires in navigating this competitive landscape.

India pointed out that there has been a notable shift away from traditional fine dining experiences, with clients now seeking trendy spots that focus more on the social aspect than culinary excellence. The emphasis is on the “fear of missing out” (FOMO), as diners seek to share their experiences rather than simply enjoy a meal.
