Securing a reservation at New York’s top restaurants has become increasingly challenging, reaching new levels of difficulty in recent years. According to Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, many popular dining establishments have become nearly impossible to access, leaving food enthusiasts frustrated.

The situation has escalated to the point where the New York state legislature recently passed a law banning third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, which allowed users to resell restaurant reservations for upwards of $200, akin to ticket scalping for concerts or sporting events.

Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, labeled this legislative move a significant win for the hospitality sector, aimed at reducing reservation competition and protecting restaurants from costly no-shows.

Despite these legislative efforts, the demand for trendy and upscale dining experiences continues to outpace supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted that post-COVID, securing bookings for planes, restaurants, and hotels is exceedingly difficult, as capacity often hits its limit.
