Obtaining a reservation at popular restaurants in New York City has become increasingly difficult, with many food enthusiasts finding it nearly impossible to secure a table. Over the past three years, the challenge of getting a seat has intensified, leaving many potential diners frustrated.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of the booking platform Sevenrooms, highlighted the issue, stating that some restaurants have become virtually inaccessible. He mentioned that even restaurateurs, when asked for tips on securing reservations, often admit they have none to offer.

The New York state legislature recently voted to prohibit third-party booking sites, like Appointment Trader, where users were selling restaurant reservations for high prices, akin to the scalping often seen at concerts and sporting events. Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, called the new legislation a significant win for the hospitality sector, aimed at reducing reservation competition and protecting eateries from costly cancellations.

Despite this legislative action, the demand for trendy and luxurious dining experiences continues to exceed their availability. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India noted that, post-COVID, nearly every restaurant, flight, and hotel is fully booked. India, who runs a concierge service for wealthy clients, including high-profile individuals, emphasizes the importance of understanding customer desires and developing relationships with restaurants to secure reservations.

She pointed out a shift in dining preferences, with many clients moving away from traditional fine dining and tasting menus toward trendy spots. For many, dining out is less about the food and more about the experience and social bragging rights.
