Securing a reservation at New York’s hottest restaurants has become increasingly difficult, with many food enthusiasts finding themselves locked out. Over the past three years, the challenge of snagging a table has escalated significantly.
Joel Montaniel, CEO of the reservation platform Sevenrooms, noted that numerous restaurants are becoming nearly impossible to access. “I’ve even talked to restaurateurs who are also at a loss for tips on how to get in,” he shared with Bloomberg.
This growing competition for dining spots prompted the New York state legislature to ban third-party booking sites like Appointment Trader, where users were reselling restaurant reservations for inflated prices of $200 or more, a practice more commonly associated with concert and sports tickets.
Melissa Fleischut, President and CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed the legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector. She believes it will diminish the competitive pressure for reservations and safeguard restaurants from costly cancellations.
Despite these regulatory efforts, the high demand for trendy and luxurious dining experiences continues to surpass supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India highlighted the widespread nature of this phenomenon, noting that every aspect of travel and dining seems to be fully booked in the wake of the pandemic.

She also remarked on the current shift away from traditional fine dining, stating that very few clients now prefer lengthy tasting menus. Instead, the focus has shifted to trendy venues where the experience is more about social status and less about the food itself.
