Securing a dinner reservation in New York has never been more challenging, with the process becoming increasingly difficult for diners over the past three years. Many popular eateries that once welcomed food enthusiasts are now almost impossible to access.

Joel Montaniel, CEO of booking platform Sevenrooms, recently discussed this phenomenon, noting, “Some restaurants are completely booked, and even restaurateurs express their inability to offer tips on how to get in.”

This competitiveness led the New York state legislature to enact a ban on third-party booking platforms like Appointment Trader, where users had been reselling reservation slots for exorbitant prices. Melissa Fleischut, President & CEO of the New York State Restaurant Association, hailed this legislation as a significant win for the hospitality sector, aiming to reduce reservation competition and mitigate the issue of costly cancellations.

Despite these legislative efforts, the general demand for unique dining experiences continues to surpass supply. Travel advisor Jaclyn Sienna India pointed out the heightened challenges in securing spots at restaurants, hotels, and exclusive experiences since the pandemic, stating, “Every plane is full, every restaurant is full, every hotel is full.”

India, who has spent 16 years running a travel planning service for the wealthy, notes that even her high-profile clients face difficulties. Her approach to gaining access to exclusive venues hinges on understanding clientele preferences and cultivating relationships with restaurants.

She observes a notable shift in dining preferences, saying, “Clients have largely moved away from fine dining; now, they prefer trendy spots that prioritize the experience over the food itself. It’s more about the social prestige of being there.”
