Dillingham’s New Deal: A Game Changer for ASU Football’s Future

Arizona State University (ASU) and head football coach Kenny Dillingham have reportedly finalized a new five-year contract, enhancing Dillingham’s stature among Big 12 coaching salaries. This deal not only reflects his successful tenure but also includes a potential extension that could see the contract last up to ten years.

In just his second season, Dillingham has led the Sun Devils to an impressive 11-2 record, clinching the Big 12 title and securing a spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP) as the No. 4 seed. The team is set to face fifth-seeded Texas at the Peach Bowl, showcasing their remarkable rise from predictions that had placed them at the bottom of the conference just a year ago.

At 34, Dillingham was the youngest head coach in FBS college football last season. His journey to leadership at ASU is unique; after graduating from the university, he transitioned through various coaching roles, including positions at high schools and multiple colleges, demonstrating his commitment to football and his alma mater.

The most notable turnaround came after the Sun Devils finished a challenging 3-9 season before Dillingham took charge. His adept coaching is evident in the standout performances of running back Cam Skattebo, who notched over 1,500 rushing yards and finished fifth in Heisman voting, as well as freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt, who showcased substantial promise on the field.

While Dillingham’s base salary of $4.05 million was among the lowest in the Big 12 this season, his bonuses have significantly boosted his earnings. With additional incentives for playoff victories, his financial outlook is as bright as the future for the ASU football program.

As the Sun Devils gear up to face a formidable Longhorns team, their journey this season serves as a reminder that underdog stories can unfold in college football, and the determination of both the players and coaching staff could lead them to further success in the playoffs. This optimism surrounding the program, coupled with Dillingham’s new contract, sets a hopeful tone for ASU’s future.
