As college football gears up for an exciting December, the John Carroll University (JCU) Blue Streaks are preparing for a pivotal NCAA Division III quarterfinal matchup against the Berry College Vikings on December 13. After pulling off a stunning upset against the top-seeded Mount Union Purple Raiders, JCU’s momentum is palpable as they head into this battle with high hopes and favorable weather conditions.

The Blue Streaks will relish the warmer temperatures in Mount Berry, Georgia, expected to reach the high 50s and possibly into the 60s, a stark contrast to the frigid conditions faced during their recent clash with Mount Union. Berry head coach Tony Kunczewski expressed relief that his team will avoid the harsh winter in Northeast Ohio, which he views as a potential disadvantage if the game were held there. This weekend promises to feel like an early spring break for the Blue Streaks.

Star quarterback Nick Semptimphelter, who bravely tackled the cold by donning a scuba suit under his uniform against Mount Union, can expect more comfortable conditions this time around. The mild weather could provide a significant boost for JCU’s offense, which boasts a formidable lineup including All-America wide receiver Ty Montgomery, tight end Kenny Rawls, and wide receivers Shane Lindstrom. Montgomery, who recently celebrated making the All-America team with impressive statistics of 100 receptions for 1,266 yards and 15 touchdowns this season, regards the upcoming game as a blessing.

Playing in intolerable conditions impacted Semptimphelter during last week’s matchup, but the opportunity to play in milder weather is a welcome relief. “It’s not easy playing in the conditions we played in the last couple of weeks. We’re excited,” he noted.

With both teams sporting identical records of 11-1, Berry enters the game as the Southern Athletic Association champion. Established only 13 seasons ago, the Vikings have reached the NCAA D-III playoffs five times under Kunczewski but have never made it to the quarterfinals, making this a historic moment for the program.

JCU, with a long legacy in collegiate football, has thrived in pressure situations, boasting a 2-1 record in NCAA quarterfinals. Their playoff history includes notable wins that propelled them into the semifinals in previous years, and they aim to build upon that legacy this weekend.

However, Berry’s rushing attack presents a significant challenge. Kunczewski emphasizes a balanced offensive strategy, alternating between two quarterbacks—Christian Lewis, a capable passer, and Andrew Hunter, a rushing threat, who leads the team with 17 rushing touchdowns. Kunczewski also prioritizes a strong defense to limit JCU’s explosive plays, stating, “On defense, we have to limit the big plays. John Carroll has explosive players.”

As both teams finalize their preparations, JCU head coach Jeff Behrman knows the importance of matching Berry’s physicality. With a charter flight scheduled to depart to Chattanooga, Tennessee, before busing to the game, the Blue Streaks are ready to embrace the atmosphere at Valhalla Stadium.

This highly anticipated quarterfinal clash promises to be an exciting showcase of college talent and determination, with a berth in the national semifinals on the line.
