Iconic entertainer Dick Van Dyke celebrated his 99th birthday on Friday, just days after narrowly escaping a wildfire threatening his Malibu residence. Known for his role in “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” which aired from 1961 to 1966, Van Dyke approached this milestone with humor, joking about his attempts to blow out 99 candles.
The birthday festivities came shortly after a terrifying experience during the Franklin Fire, where Van Dyke collapsed while trying to safeguard his yard. Fortunately, neighbors were quick to act, carrying him to safety. “I suddenly ran out of gas. I couldn’t stand up,” Van Dyke recalled, expressing gratitude for the assistance he received. Thankfully, he and his wife, Arlene, are safe, and their unique home, part residence and part museum, was spared from the flames. However, the fire destroyed several nearby homes, and its cause is still under investigation. As of Friday morning, the fire was reported to be 30% contained, leading to road closures in the area.
In a touching family reunion, Van Dyke’s son Barry, along with his grandson Wes and great-granddaughter Kyla, managed to reach him amidst the chaos. Kyla shared a sweet birthday message for her grandfather, expressing her love and hopes for his special day.
Looking back on his incredible life, Van Dyke commented on his transition into his 100th year, admitting he finds it hard to believe he is 99. “I don’t feel great, but I don’t feel 99,” he said, maintaining his trademark optimism.
As he prepares for the future, Van Dyke expressed a desire to keep busy and continue acting, sharing that he has had discussions with a major studio and a well-known director about potential projects. His lighthearted hope is to land a role as a grandfather on a sitcom, displaying his relentless ambition and passion for his craft.
As a celebrated figure in Hollywood, Dick Van Dyke serves as an inspiration, showing that age doesn’t define one’s zest for life or career aspirations. His journey is a testament to resilience and the enduring spirit that can thrive even in the face of adversity.
