Diamond DeShields, a former star player for the Lady Vols basketball team, has been waived by the Connecticut Sun as they finalize their roster for the 2025 WNBA season. The announcement was made on May 15, and it comes as a surprise considering DeShields was one of the key acquisitions for the Sun this offseason after a major reshuffling within the team.
DeShields previously signed a one-year unprotected contract with Connecticut during free agency, but her chances were hindered due to an ankle injury that kept her out for most of training camp. She did not participate in the Sun’s two preseason games, which ultimately played a significant role in the team’s decision to release her.
Selected as the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky, DeShields has had a notable career that includes winning a WNBA championship in 2021 alongside Tennessee legend Candace Parker. She was recognized as an All-Star and made the All-WNBA second team in 2019. However, her journey has been marked by challenges, including recovery from surgery that removed a tumor from her spinal cord in 2020. Though she managed to make a commendable recovery from that surgery, a knee injury in 2023 led to her sitting out the entire season while with the Dallas Wings.
Since her trade to the Phoenix Mercury in 2022, DeShields has played for a different team each year, showcasing her versatility and talent despite the obstacles in her path. In her time with the Mercury, she averaged 13.1 points per game and continued to contribute to her teams as she returned to the Sky in 2024.
DeShields had an impactful college career, playing for the Lady Vols from 2014 to 2017. She made a name for herself as an All-SEC first team selection during her redshirt junior year, averaging 17.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game.
While this latest development may seem disappointing, it is essential to recognize DeShields’ resilience and ability to overcome setbacks, making her a player to watch for future opportunities in the league.
