Diabetes Fiji’s Executive Director Kini Marawa has vocalized the persistent funding challenges that the organization encounters, despite receiving limited backing from government grants. He underscores the necessity for stronger partnerships with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, particularly in enhancing school programs. Marawa advocates for the integration of diabetes and non-communicable diseases (NCD) education into the national curriculum, viewing it as crucial for long-term prevention efforts.
Diabetes Fiji has submitted several policies and budgets, including proposals aimed at reallocating excise duty revenue to support health organizations like theirs. Regrettably, these initiatives have not yet come to fruition, leaving the organization facing difficulties in community outreach and day-to-day operations.
Moreover, Marawa has pointed out the postponement of a significant Ministry of Health survey report, which is expected to be released between November and December. He believes that the results will play a vital role in guiding future decisions. Additionally, he seeks updates on the progress of the National NCD and Wellness Strategic Plan, emphasizing that enhanced coordination within the Ministry of Health remains a pressing issue that Diabetes Fiji continually raises in dialogue with health officials.
Despite these substantial hurdles, Marawa’s relentless dedication to advocating for diabetes education and prevention demonstrates a hopeful commitment to improving community health outcomes.
