Behind the Lens: A Photographer's Battle and Resilience Against Diabetes

Diabetes Battle: Fiji Photographer’s Fight to Save Foot and Career

Leon Lord, an enthusiastic photojournalist, has made a significant impact by capturing a wide array of moments, from the intensity of sports to the subtleties of everyday life. His work has not only connected people throughout Fiji but also created narratives filled with joy and emotion. Yet, amidst his thriving career, Lord has encountered a serious health challenge: diabetes, a condition that claims around 6.7 million lives globally each year.

Earlier this year, while on a photo shoot, Lord started feeling unwell. Initially attributing it to mere fatigue, he quickly realized that his condition was more serious when he experienced swelling in his left foot the following day. His journey took a drastic turn after a visit to the doctor, leading to alarming medical recommendations that included the possibility of above-the-knee amputation. “I felt crushed; my job revolves around photography, and losing my leg would mean losing my livelihood,” he recalled.

Determined to explore alternatives, Lord sought a second opinion, only to be informed that he would need amputation of his toes instead. Later, a consultation with another specialist led to a recommendation for below-the-knee amputation, igniting a flicker of hope within him. With the urgency of making critical decisions concerning his health and for the sake of his six children, he and his wife deliberated on the path forward.

The emotional weight of his condition weighed heavily on Lord, who felt an overwhelming responsibility to remain strong for his family. Just a day before his scheduled surgery, he received a visit from Dr. Hawea, who provided unexpected news: under certain conditions, there could still be a chance to save his foot after losing two toes. This revelation allowed Lord to proceed with surgery, marking the start of a lengthy rehabilitation journey.

During the following three months of recovery, Lord confronted the harsh realities of diabetes while reflecting on his life and health choices. He admitted to feeling lost at times but also recognized the importance of educating others about the disease. His experience has led him to advocate for better nutrition and lifestyle choices, stressing that individuals must take control of their health, regardless of economic or cultural barriers.

Today, Leon Lord credits a combination of medical expertise and personal discipline for his journey toward recovery. His story serves not only as a testament to his personal struggle but also as an urgent reminder of the resilience humans possess when confronting health challenges. In sharing his journey, Lord emphasizes the importance of community support and personal responsibility, inspiring others to approach their battles with fortitude and hope. His commitment to recovery reflects a spirit that embraces challenges as opportunities for growth, shining a light on the power of determination in the face of adversity.
