An employee of the Department of Homeland Security is among 16 men arrested in a recent sting operation aimed at dismantling a sex trafficking ring in Minnesota. The operation, named “Operation Creep,” focused on individuals allegedly attempting to solicit sex from minors.
Alexander Steven Back, aged 41, was apprehended during the multi-agency operation, which was detailed by Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges. The suspects were allegedly seeking to meet with someone they believed was a 17-year-old girl. Back’s role within the department is that of an auditor for Homeland Security Investigations and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, having been hired in 2022 to oversee employment eligibility verification forms, commonly known as I-9 forms. Notably, he is not classified as a law enforcement officer.
During his arrest, Back reportedly identified himself to other officers as part of ICE, stating, “I’m ICE, boys,” according to Hodges. In response to the incident, ICE has placed Back on administrative leave and is cooperating with local authorities while initiating its own internal investigation through the agency’s Office of Professional Responsibility.
The authorities utilized sophisticated methods to monitor online platforms known for facilitating sex purchases from trafficking victims. Chief Hodges described the operation’s complexity, noting that traffickers often involve international contacts who arrange meetings between the buyers and sex workers.
After his arrest on Thursday, Back was released on Saturday after posting a $75,000 bond. He faces at least one count of prostitution, although further details from the Hennepin County Attorney’s office regarding the case are pending.
