Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem took to X to commemorate the 23rd anniversary of the department, noting its crucial role in national security as the partial government shutdown extended into its 16th day. “Today marks the Department of Homeland Security’s 23rd anniversary,” Noem stated, highlighting the establishment of DHS shortly after the September 11, 2001 attacks. “Since then, DHS has stood at the helm of our country’s national security, protecting the American people and our homeland.”

In her message, Noem expressed her gratitude to DHS employees who are currently working without pay due to the ongoing shutdown, acknowledging that many are facing financial hardships as their paychecks decreased last week. “I am especially grateful to those of you who are serving during the current shutdown without a paycheck, and I thank you for your continued service and sacrifice to our nation,” she said.

A press release from the DHS detailed achievements under Noem’s leadership, including the deportation of 3 million illegal immigrants, arrests of gang members, and significant drug seizures. “As threats evolve, DHS is there. By air, land, sea, or cyberspace, the DHS workforce boldly confronts national threats every day,” Noem stated. She emphasized the department’s ongoing efforts to combat cybersecurity issues, terrorism, and challenges at the southern border, as well as the need for immigration reform and support for Americans affected by natural disasters.

In the political arena, a Senate vote is slated for Monday on a House-passed bill aimed at restoring DHS funding. This comes amid tensions, as Democrats have previously opposed the spending package, insisting on stricter reforms for immigration enforcement officers in light of the recent deaths of anti-ICE protesters Alex Pretti and Renee Good, both killed by federal agents in January.

This anniversary and the current challenges underscore the important and often underrecognized work of the DHS, as they continue to adapt and respond to dynamic national security threats while also facing operational difficulties due to the government shutdown.
