The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has refuted claims made by an online publication suggesting that the cancellation of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary activities was linked to an alleged attempted military coup. This report stated that 16 military officers, ranging from Captain to Brigadier General, had been detained by the Defence Intelligence Agency for purported involvement in covert meetings aimed at orchestrating a coup against the government.

In a statement issued by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, the Armed Forces of Nigeria denounced the claims as entirely false and malicious, asserting that they were designed to generate unnecessary anxiety and distrust among the public. The DHQ clarified that the decision to cancel the Independence Anniversary parade was made to facilitate President Bola Tinubu’s attendance at a crucial bilateral meeting abroad and to allow the Armed Forces to maintain focus on their ongoing fight against terrorism, insurgency, and banditry.

The statement also emphasized that the investigation involving the detained officers is part of a standard internal review process aimed at reinforcing discipline and professionalism within the military. An investigative panel has been established, and the outcomes will be shared with the public once the investigation is completed.

The DHQ encouraged citizens to continue their support for security agencies, highlighting the collaborative efforts of the Federal Government, legislature, and judiciary in ensuring the nation’s safety, development, and well-being. It reassured the public of the Armed Forces’ unwavering loyalty to the Constitution and the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership.

In light of these developments, it is imperative for citizens to remain vigilant and discerning about the information disseminated, particularly regarding issues of national security. The DHQ’s call for support reflects a commitment to transparency and accountability in the military’s operations and a dedication to upholding democratic values in Nigeria.
