When “Dexter: Resurrection” made its debut, many fans hoped that it would finally resolve a frustrating plot hole left over from “Dexter: New Blood.” Unfortunately, showrunner Clyde Phillips has indicated that viewers shouldn’t expect clarity on the fate of Dexter’s stepchildren, Cody and Astor, who are Harrison’s half-siblings.

In the original series, Cody and Astor were Dexter’s stepchildren from his marriage to Rita Bennett. Following Rita’s tragic death, the two moved to Orlando to live with their grandparents but would occasionally visit Dexter and their younger half-sibling, Harrison. However, in “New Blood,” when a teenage Harrison emerges, he mentions having spent years in Miami’s foster care system, leaving fans baffled as to why Cody and Astor hadn’t come to his aid. The siblings clearly shared a close bond in the earlier seasons, making their absence feel particularly conspicuous.

This oversight continues into “Resurrection,” where in episode 5, titled “Murder Horny,” Dexter and Harrison claim to be each other’s only remaining family, even though Cody and Astor are still alive and could very well play a role in Harrison’s life. It seems implausible that they would neglect Harrison, leaving him to fend for himself in New York City. The loss of Debra Morgan further emphasizes the notion that Cody and Astor are Harrison and Dexter’s last surviving relatives.

Despite fans echoing their hopes for the return of Cody and Astor, Phillips has stated that these characters simply aren’t part of their discussions or plans moving forward. “In all honesty, we don’t even think about them,” he explained. The dismissal of Cody and Astor highlights a considerable gap in the narrative, as even a brief reference could address lingering questions that fans have entertained since “New Blood” aired.

Given that “Resurrection” has brought back numerous characters from the original series—such as James Doakes and Miguel Prado—viewers find it puzzling that Cody and Astor won’t be revisited. The lack of acknowledgment of these characters feels like a missed opportunity to enrich the story and connect it to the beloved original.

Phillips and the writing team’s decision to overlook Cody and Astor contradicts the established relationships within the series, frustrating loyal fans who remember the dynamic between the siblings. While the focus remains on Dexter and Harrison’s relationship, the absence of Cody and Astor raises questions about narrative continuity and character development. Fans remain hopeful that the show’s future installments might still find a way to integrate these key players into the storyline.
