Devo Turns 50 With Netflix Doc and Cosmic De-Evolution Tour

Devo, the iconic band from Akron, Ohio, celebrates its distinctive journey in the music industry, marking 50 years since its inception. Known for their unique style and socio-political messages, Devo continues to captivate audiences with their artistic and foresighted music. Their songs, including “Whip It,” “Girl U Want,” and the innovative cover of the Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” remain relevant and invigorating today, even as they were when first released.

The band, currently consisting of founding members Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh and Gerald Casale, has been touring since 2024 to commemorate their milestone anniversary. Their journey is chronicled in the new Netflix documentary titled “Devo.” Recently, they performed at the Fillmore Detroit, and this week, they embark on a 12-date Cosmic De-Evolution Tour alongside the B-52’s and Lene Lovich. The tour will include a performance at the Pine Knob Music Theatre.

Mark Mothersbaugh, who has also forged a successful career in film and TV composition, expresses his amazement at the diverse audience demographic at their shows. He notes a significant presence of younger fans, whose curiosity about musical history leads them to discover Devo’s influence on influential bands like Nirvana.

While often perceived as experimental and avant-garde, Devo aimed for mainstream impact, and their music continues to resonate, highlighted by “Uncontrollable Urge” featuring on popular TV series. Mothersbaugh believes the band’s message of De-Evolution is gaining traction in today’s world, as people search for answers to modern challenges. He advocates for creative evolution and environmental stewardship, rather than considering drastic measures like colonizing Mars.

Touring with acts like the B-52’s and Lene Lovich is a nostalgic experience for Mothersbaugh, who regards them as kindred spirits. He appreciates the complementary styles they bring, which promise to offer audiences varied musical experiences. This blend of nostalgia and innovation encapsulates the fusion of Devo’s past and future.

Devo’s last full album, “Something for Everybody,” was released in 2010 with subsequent singles, including last year’s “Total Love.” While new music is not ruled out, the band focuses on live performances, with more shows anticipated next year.

For fans attending the Cosmic De-Evolution Tour, it promises an eclectic mix of history, nostalgia, and enduring innovation at Pine Knob Music Theatre.
