Stefan Noesen scored the first goal of the 2024-25 NHL season as the New Jersey Devils defeated the Buffalo Sabres 4-1 in the league’s regular-season opener held in Prague, Czechia.

Jacob Markstrom, making his debut with the Devils, recorded 30 saves, while Paul Cotter contributed an empty-net goal and an assist. The game began with a ceremonial puck drop by former NHL star Jaromir Jagr, who continues to play in the Czech league. Noesen found the net 8:39 into the game, giving New Jersey an early lead. Defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic, also making his debut for the Devils, added to the score, and Nico Hischier scored early in the second period. Owen Power finally put the Sabres on the scoreboard midway through the third period, but Cotter sealed the win with a late goal.

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe praised his team’s effort, stating they were determined to compete at a high level from the very beginning. The game was part of the NHL Global Series, which includes additional matches scheduled in Tampere, Finland, on November 1 and 2 featuring the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers against the Dallas Stars. This marks the 11th season the NHL has hosted games in Europe to expand its fan base in hockey-loving countries.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen performed well for the Sabres, making 19 saves, but the team struggled to capitalize on four power-play opportunities. Buffalo aims to break a 13-season playoff drought, and coach Lindy Ruff, who previously led them to the postseason, acknowledged the need for improvement, noting that the Devils were quicker and more effective at winning key puck battles.

Before the game commenced, there was a moment of silence to honor Johnny Gaudreau, a Columbus Blue Jackets player who tragically lost his life along with his brother in a bicycling accident in New Jersey.

New Jersey, which previously allowed 283 goals last season, hopes that Markstrom will enhance their defensive performance. Coach Keefe believes Markstrom is not only a valuable asset on the ice but also a positive presence in the locker room.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again in Prague for the second game of their series on Saturday.
