In Prague, the New Jersey Devils opened the 2024-25 NHL season with a 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. Jacob Markstrom, in his debut for the Devils, recorded 30 saves while Paul Cotter contributed an empty-net goal and an assist.

The game’s ceremonial puck drop was done by NHL legend Jaromir Jagr, still active in the Czech league. Stefan Noesen marked the first goal of the season just 8:39 into the game, followed by a goal from defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic. Nico Hischier extended the lead early in the second period before Owen Power netted a goal for the Sabres. Cotter later secured the win with a final goal.

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe praised his team’s effort, highlighting their intensity from the onset. The match was part of the NHL Global Series, aimed at expanding the league’s fan base in Europe, particularly in hockey-loving nations like Czechia and Finland.

Buffalo’s Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen saved 19 shots as the Sabres aimed to break a 13-season playoff drought. Coach Lindy Ruff, returning for his second stint with the team, noted the importance of the game’s start, as Buffalo struggled to keep pace with New Jersey.

The Devils were bolstered by significant contributions from newcomers, including Cotter, Kovacevic, and Markstrom. Last season, New Jersey had difficulties defensively, allowing 283 goals. The team hopes that Markstrom will be pivotal in improving this statistic.

Before the game, a moment of silence was held to honor Johnny Gaudreau, a Columbus Blue Jackets forward who tragically died in a bicycle accident.

The Devils and Sabres will conclude their series in Prague on Saturday.
