Stefan Noesen scored the first goal of the 2024-25 NHL season, putting the New Jersey Devils on the board during their opening game against the Buffalo Sabres, which ended with a score of 4-1. The game took place in Prague, Czechia, marking the NHL’s regular-season opener.

Jacob Markstrom, making his debut with the Devils, made 30 saves, and Paul Cotter contributed with an empty-net goal and an assist. The ceremonial puck drop was performed by former NHL star Jaromir Jagr, who continues to play in the Czech league. Noesen found the net 8 minutes and 39 seconds into the first period, giving New Jersey an early lead. Johnathan Kovacevic, another new addition to the team, extended the lead to 2-0, while Nico Hischier scored at the beginning of the second period. Owen Power of the Sabres managed to score midway through the third period, but Cotter sealed the game with a fourth goal for the Devils.

Devils coach Sheldon Keefe praised his team’s desire to compete at a high level and noted their aggressive start to the game. This matchup is part of the NHL Global Series, with additional international games scheduled for November in Finland.

Buffalo’s goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen recorded 19 saves, and the Sabres are aiming to break a 13-season playoff drought this year under the guidance of coach Lindy Ruff, who previously led the team to the playoffs multiple times.

Ruff acknowledged that the fast start by the Devils was crucial to the outcome of the game, as they consistently outpaced his team at the puck.

Both teams gathered for a moment of silence before the game in memory of Johnny Gaudreau, a Columbus Blue Jackets player who tragically lost his life in a cycling accident.

The Devils are hopeful that Markstrom’s presence will improve their defense after a difficult previous season, where they ranked 27th in goals allowed. The teams will meet again for the second game of their series in Prague on Saturday.
