The Detroit Red Wings have made moves to strengthen their roster by signing forward James van Riemsdyk and defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker to one-year contracts. On Tuesday, it was announced that van Riemsdyk’s deal is valued at $1 million, including bonuses, while Bernard-Docker’s contract is set at $875,000.
James van Riemsdyk, now 36 years old, had a noteworthy season with the Columbus Blue Jackets, contributing 16 goals and 36 points over the course of 71 games. Standing at 6-foot-3, van Riemsdyk has an extensive career since being drafted second overall by the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2007 NHL Draft. Throughout his career, he has accumulated 327 goals and 665 points across 1,082 games, playing for teams including the Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, and Blue Jackets. His standout performance came in the 2016-17 season when he recorded 36 goals and 62 points while with the Maple Leafs. Additionally, he has represented the USA internationally, participating in the 2014 Winter Olympics, two World Championships, and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Jacob Bernard-Docker, 25, also brings valuable experience to the Red Wings. Last season, he played 40 games, split between the Ottawa Senators and Buffalo Sabres, and recorded two goals and six assists. The 26th overall pick by the Senators in 2018, Bernard-Docker was involved in a notable trade that sent Dylan Cozens to Ottawa. Following this, he became an unrestricted free agent after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Sabres.
