The Detroit sports community is mourning the loss of a beloved figure, broadcaster Ray “Razor” Lane, who passed away at the age of 95 from complications following a fall at his home. His daughter, Deanne Lane, confirmed the news.

Ray Lane was a distinguished and influential voice in the Detroit sports scene, having covered a wide range of sporting events in the city throughout his extensive career. His work included commentary and broadcasting for the Detroit Tigers, Detroit Lions, Detroit Pistons, and the Detroit Red Wings. Beyond professional sports, Lane also covered college games for Michigan, Michigan State, and the University of Detroit.

Lane earned the affectionate nickname “Razor” during his 16-year tenure covering the Detroit Red Wings, a moniker that became synonymous with his career across various sports disciplines.

Respected by audiences and peers alike, Lane’s illustrious career was marked by numerous accolades. In 1997, he was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame, a testament to his impact on the field of sports broadcasting. Additionally, he was honored with the Ernie Harwell Lifetime Contribution Award, a touching tribute given his collaborative history with Harwell during their shared broadcasts of the Detroit Tigers’ games.

Despite the passing of his wife, Carolyn, in 2004, Lane leaves behind a loving family. He is survived by three children, four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

The heartfelt sympathies of the Detroit community go out to the Lane family and all who knew Ray Lane. His legacy as a prominent broadcaster and cherished figure in Detroit’s sports history will be long remembered.
