Tom Kennedy has been named the primary kick returner for the Detroit Lions, as confirmed by special teams coordinator Dave Fipp during a press conference. Fipp praised Kennedy’s performance, indicating that he has earned his spot in the kickoff return role.
Kalif Raymond will maintain his position as the punt returner after recovering from an ankle injury sustained in Week 12. Fipp expressed confidence in both players’ abilities, stating, “Kalif’s obviously an incredible player for us,” and noted that Kennedy has performed admirably in the kick return game over the last couple of weeks, especially after stepping up during Raymond’s absence. In Week 14, Kennedy averaged an impressive 40 yards per return against the Dallas Cowboys.
Raymond has been participating in limited practices, signaling he may be close to returning to the field. Fipp mentioned that once Raymond is fully healthy, he could join Kennedy as one of the returners, providing the Lions with a strong combination in their special teams unit. Jacob Saylors has also been referenced as another potential option alongside Kennedy.
Fipp expressed his enthusiasm for Kennedy, commending his dedication and hard work, and emphasized that he deserved recognition for his contributions. “I can’t tell you how ecstatic I am for Tom Kennedy,” Fipp said, acknowledging Kennedy’s unwavering commitment to improving and making the most of his opportunities.
With Kennedy’s recent performances, the Lions now possess two dependable kick returners, adding depth and versatility to their special teams as they aim for continued success this season.
