A former police detective from Stoughton, Massachusetts, has been indicted in the death of Sandra Birchmore, who was found dead in her apartment in Canton in 2021. Initially ruled a suicide, her death has now been reclassified as a homicide following new evidence uncovered by federal prosecutors. Matthew Farwell, 38, is accused of killing Birchmore, who was three months pregnant at the time of her death, after she allegedly disclosed their relationship and pregnancy.
Federal authorities assert that Farwell, who had a sexual relationship with Birchmore starting from when she was 15 years old, acted to conceal his crimes upon learning of her pregnancy. Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua Levy described Birchmore’s experience as one of prolonged abuse and exploitation, stating that she had endured statutory rape and sexual violence at the hands of Farwell, who was employed as a police officer during the relationship.
Law enforcement officials allege that Farwell strangled Birchmore in 2021 and then manipulated her apartment to falsely suggest she had taken her own life. He was arrested on Wednesday morning by an FBI SWAT team. Statements from various legal authorities condemned Farwell’s alleged actions, characterizing them as deeply troubling and a grave miscarriage of justice.
The investigation into Birchmore’s death gained momentum after her family hired a pathologist who found indications of homicide, conflicting with the initial ruling of suicide. The re-examination of evidence revealed critical findings that led to the recent indictment. Farwell faces severe charges, including killing a witness and wire fraud, and could receive a life sentence if convicted.
Prior to her death, Birchmore appeared to be looking forward to motherhood, actively making inquiries about baby clothing and photoshoots. Farwell’s alleged reaction to the news of her pregnancy was reportedly negative, leading to violent acts against her.
The case has reignited concerns around the safety of youth in law enforcement programs, particularly given that Birchmore was involved with the Stoughton Police Explorers Academy, a youth program affiliated with law enforcement.
Birchmore’s family is pursuing a wrongful death lawsuit, asserting that officials failed to protect her and that her death was indicative of systemic issues regarding abuse and accountability within the police department.
As federal investigations continue, authorities emphasize the need for justice in Birchmore’s case, highlighting the broader implications for similar allegations in law enforcement circles.
