Derek Hough, the Emmy-winning star known for his multifaceted talents as an actor, singer, dancer, choreographer, and reality TV judge, has recently embraced a new role: fatherhood. The proud father welcomed his first child, Everley, born on December 29, with his wife, Hayley Erbert. In an exclusive interview, Hough shared his heartfelt reflections on this life-changing experience.
Describing his transition into parenthood, Hough expressed, “I don’t think anything really surprised me. I think I’m just more in love with my wife. It’s a beautiful thing to witness,” showcasing a mix of joy and admiration for both his wife and their new family dynamic.
As he adapts to the demands of being a new parent, Hough has found solace in catching up on television, particularly enjoying watching his friend and fellow “Dancing with the Stars” pro Mark Ballas on the fourth season of Peacock’s “The Traitors.” “Oh, man, I love it,” Hough exclaimed about Ballas’s participation in the competition, adding that he finds great amusement in watching him tackle challenges.
Since the season premiere on January 8, Ballas has adopted a strategic low-key approach, often taking on a background role that allows him to observe his fellow contestants, including notable figures like Candiace Dillard Bassett and Lisa Rinna. Hough believes this strategy is deliberate and highlights Ballas’s dedication to the game. “He had a playbook. He’s a student. He trained. He’s prepared. He always comes prepared,” Hough said, emphasizing his friend’s thorough preparation for the show, which included studying all international seasons of “The Traitors.”
In his own demanding schedule, Hough balances his television commitments and newfound responsibility as a father by utilizing innovative fitness solutions. He’s partnered with Barilla for their “Protein+ Training Timers,” a series of micro-workout videos that encourage quick exercises while cooking. Hough noted the benefits of incorporating physical activity into routine tasks, making the most of his time.
“I like to call it ‘NET’: No Extra Time. So when you’re cooking your pasta on the stove, you’ve got 8, 10 minutes, it’s plenty of time to get a little workout in,” he explained. The video series, accessible on Barilla’s YouTube channel, features low-impact workouts designed to maintain fitness amidst busy lifestyles.
Though supportive of Ballas’s journey on “The Traitors,” Hough humorously dismissed the idea of participating himself, citing his struggle with deception in games. He also suggested fellow “DWTS” star Emma Slater as a potential contestant for future seasons, praising her engaging personality.
Overall, Hough’s enthusiasm for both fatherhood and his friends shines through, highlighting his ability to adapt and embrace new challenges with positivity and determination.
