Derek Carr’s Injury Dilemma: What’s Next for the Saints?

Derek Carr has faced challenges against the Kansas City Chiefs throughout his career, and now injury woes have added to his troubles. During the Week 5 “Monday Night Football” game, the New Orleans Saints quarterback sustained an injury after a hit by Chiefs defensive back Chamarri Conner in the fourth quarter.

At the time of the collision, the Saints were trailing 23-13. Carr appeared to grab his back following the hit and was quickly taken to the medical tent for evaluation.

In an update on Carr’s condition, Saints head coach Dennis Allen confirmed that the injury was on the left side but did not provide further specifics. Trainers informed him that the quarterback had hurt his side. Carr mentioned he would undergo an MRI the following day to assess the injury more accurately.

After the hit, Carr exited the game and was ruled “questionable” with an oblique injury, as reported by the ESPN broadcast. He did not return for the Saints’ next offensive series and did not finish the contest.

In terms of quarterback depth, the Saints are not particularly seasoned behind Carr. Jake Haener serves as the second-string quarterback, while Spencer Rattler is designated as the emergency third QB. Haener was chosen in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft and notably attended Fresno State, the same university as Carr.
