DePaul University appears to be peaking at an opportune moment in the season as it faces Villanova in Big East play on Wednesday night. The Blue Demons are on a quest to extend their winning streak to three games while trying to end a seven-game losing streak against the Wildcats in Chicago.
With a current record of 16-13 and 8-10 in the Big East, DePaul is poised to achieve a remarkable milestone. If they secure another victory, they will match the school record of nine Big East wins set during the 2006-07 season. After struggling with four consecutive losses earlier this year, the Blue Demons have rebounded well, boasting a 4-1 record in their last five games.
Following a narrow win against Creighton, DePaul showcased its defensive prowess by holding Marquette to just 38.3% shooting in a 62-51 road victory. The team’s defense has significantly improved, allowing an average of only 64.2 points over the past five games. Currently positioned fifth in the conference standings, DePaul is in a favorable position for a bye into the quarterfinals of next week’s Big East tournament.
“We’ve got great kids who really care about this challenge in front of them to change the narrative,” said Blue Demons coach Chris Holtmann, emphasizing the team’s commitment to putting the program first. NJ Benson has emerged as a key player, coming off his fifth double-double of the season, averaging 17.4 points and 10.6 rebounds in recent games.
On the other side, Villanova, with a record of 22-7 and 13-5 in the Big East, is looking to recover from recent challenges. They have lost two of their last three matches, including a disappointing 89-57 defeat to No. 15 St. John’s, where they struggled offensively and defensively. The loss of freshman starter Matt Hodge due to a season-ending knee injury adds to their woes. Hodge averaged 9.2 points and 3.6 rebounds and was known for his defensive capabilities.
Despite these setbacks, Villanova’s leading scorer, Tyler Perkins, who averages 13.3 points per game, has the potential to bounce back after being held to just three points in their last outing. In the earlier match against DePaul this season, he scored 19 points.
As the two teams prepare to clash, DePaul is aiming to assert itself and continue its late-season momentum, while Villanova seeks to regroup and find its rhythm once again. The matchup promises to be a pivotal one for both programs as they navigate through the intense competition of the Big East.
