During the Cannes Film Festival on May 19, Denzel Washington found himself in a heated exchange with a photographer while attending the premier of “Highest 2 Lowest,” directed by Spike Lee. The situation escalated when the photographer attempted to grab Washington’s arm to get his attention, prompting a visibly upset Washington to confront him.

As Washington attempted to engage with Lee and fellow cast member A$AP Rocky, he became irate after being touched by the photographer. He pointed his finger and repeatedly shouted “stop,” making it clear he was displeased with the intrusive behavior. The photographer was seen laughing, prompting Washington to further express his anger by pulling away and shouting for respect.

Despite the tense moment, Washington’s night took a positive turn as he was unexpectedly presented with an honorary Palme d’Or award at the event. Festival chief Thierry Frémaux recognized Washington’s significant contributions to cinema and presented the award alongside Spike Lee, who praised Washington as his “brother.” Washington expressed deep gratitude and excitement for the honor, reflecting on his career and the privilege of being part of the film industry.

“Highest 2 Lowest” is an anticipated thriller set to release in theaters on August 22, with a streaming debut on Apple TV+ in September. The film is inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s classic “High and Low” and explores themes of crime and survival.

This incident showcases the pressures celebrities face in public settings while highlighting Washington’s resilience and commitment to his craft, underscoring a career marked by both challenges and extraordinary achievements.
