Victoria Kjær Theilvig of Denmark has made history by winning the title of Miss Universe 2024, marking the first time a contestant from Denmark has achieved this prestigious honor. The 21-year-old, who is an accomplished dancer, entrepreneur, and aspiring lawyer, triumphed over more than 120 other competitors during the grand finale held in Mexico City.

As she received the crown from the outgoing titleholder, Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua, Theilvig was met with applause from her fellow contestants. The event was highlighted by a performance from singer Robin Thicke and was hosted by Mario Lopez, known for his role in “Saved by the Bell,” alongside former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo.

The pageant’s format this year began by narrowing down contestants through a national costume presentation, which led to the selection of 30 finalists. These contestants showcased their talents in swimwear and evening gowns before the final five participated in a question-and-answer segment addressing leadership and resilience. When asked about her approach to life without fear of judgment, Theilvig confidently stated that she wouldn’t change a thing, emphasizing her dedication to living fully each day. She encouraged those watching to persevere, regardless of their backgrounds, expressing her desire for positive change.

First runner-up honors went to Chidimma Adetshina from Nigeria, while Maria Fernanda Beltran from Mexico secured the second runner-up position. The top five was rounded out by Suchata Chuangsri of Thailand and Ileana Marquez Pedroza of Venezuela, who made strides in the competition’s inclusivity.

Notably, this year’s Miss Universe marked a turning point as it became the first in its 72-year history to allow women over the age of 28 to participate. This change came in response to calls for the event to modernize, as did the lifting of restrictions on pregnant women and mothers, as well as those who have been married. The contest also welcomed contestants from countries like Cuba, Belarus, and Eritrea for the first time in decades, showing a move towards a more diverse representation.

However, the journey to the competition wasn’t without its challenges, as local pageants leading up to the event faced controversies, most notably with Adetshina resigning from the Miss Universe South Africa pageant amid discussions about her nationality.

Theilvig’s victory not only brings pride to her home country but also represents a hopeful step toward inclusivity and representation in global beauty standards. This shift and the messages of perseverance and change echoed by Theilvig serve as an inspiration for many.
