Denarau Bridge Bus Crash Triggers Fiji Road Safety Warnings

The National Fire Authority (NFA) has issued a cautionary advisory to drivers, especially those operating Public Service Vehicles, in the wake of a serious accident at the Denarau Bridge in Nadi. This incident, which occurred at approximately 7:51 a.m. on November 2, involved a 60-seater bus transporting hotel staff that veered off the bridge and overturned into a nearby creek.

Emergency responders from the Nadi Fire Station promptly arrived at the scene with two fire trucks and a team of 11 firefighters. Upon their arrival, they discovered seven passengers receiving assistance from bystanders, with three individuals in need of medical attention who were treated with neck braces and spinal boards. These injured passengers were subsequently transported to Nadi Hospital for further care, along with four additional passengers who required evaluation. The bus driver remains unaccounted for as investigators continue to clarify the total number of passengers aboard the bus at the time of the incident. After securing the area, firefighters handed the scene over to the police for further inquiry.

NFA Chief Executive Puamau Sowane emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety regulations, particularly with the festive season approaching, which typically sees an increase in traffic volume. Current statistics indicate that Fiji’s national road death toll has escalated to 59, up from 44 during the same period last year.

This accident highlights ongoing road safety concerns in Fiji. Earlier on the same day, another bus operated by Classic Buses Ltd was involved in a similar incident, resulting in injuries to 50 passengers when it veered off a bridge. In that case, 43 individuals were treated at Zens Medical Hospital while others were taken to Nadi Hospital. Classic Buses has pledged to work with authorities and initiated an internal review to ensure compliance with safety protocols.

As authorities investigate these incidents, there is hope within the community that road safety measures will improve. The prompt and effective response from emergency services during both events underscores the crucial role of community cooperation in safeguarding passenger safety. With increased awareness and strict enforcement of traffic regulations, there is optimism for a future where the likelihood of such accidents is significantly reduced, paving the way for safer journeys for all road users in Fiji.
