A day after President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election, Democrats raised $100 million through their main fundraising platform, ActBlue, according to a live tracker maintained by developer Ryan Murphy at The Marshall Project. Although this figure is unofficial and based on ActBlue’s historical donation data since 2004, it offers insight into the group’s fundraising efforts ahead of formal disclosures.
On Sunday alone, $66.9 million was collected from donors to support Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign, marking the highest single-day fundraising total in the 2024 election cycle for ActBlue. The previous highest daily total was recorded on September 30, 2020, during the first presidential debate between Biden and Trump.
Following the surge in donations on Sunday, ActBlue reached a milestone of $14 billion raised since its inception two decades ago, while its Republican counterpart, WinRed, established in late 2019, has raised approximately $4.3 billion as reported by OpenSecrets.
ActBlue noted an influx of new small-dollar donors, stating, “We’ve seen so many folks saying they made their first ever donation in the last 24 hours! It’s so motivating to see new small-dollar donors join the grassroots movement!”
In addition, Future Forward, a super PAC aligned with Biden, secured $150 million in new commitments from major donors shortly after Biden’s announcement and subsequent endorsement of Harris. Swing Left reported that it raised over $160,000 within 24 hours to support the eventual Democratic nominee.
Evercore founder Roger Altman expressed confidence in Harris’s campaign financing, further supported by Democratic mega-donors George and Alex Soros. Historically, Biden’s fundraising peaked after significant political events, including a notable $28 million raised just after a debate loss to Trump in June 2020. Following Trump’s conviction on felony charges, Trump and his affiliated groups raised $69 million in a short timeframe, showcasing the competitive fundraising landscape.
Between April and June, pro-Biden groups collected $332.4 million, while pro-Trump groups raised $431.2 million, leaving Biden with $281 million and Trump with $336.2 million by the end of June.
